NWA Fashion Week Promotes Shopping Local

NWA Fashion Week is all about keeping it local and on Wednesday the theme was shop local.

NWA Fashion Week is all about keeping it local and on Wednesday the theme was shop local.

"To keep the money in the local community, to help with schools and roads, just to keep the money here in Northwest Arkansas." Allyson Mertins, owner of Mertins Eyecare.

Mertins Eyecare showcased their fashionable frames while local boutiques and designers showed off their trends.

"We hope to get more stores to carry us so that they in turn to carry brands that are locally made and produced," said Wayne Bell, owner of Bonner Bell.

Business owners from the region say taxes they pay stay here and it keeps people working.

"A big percentage is going back to us and is going back to the store and it's giving jobs to the community," said Bell.

Small business owners also say participating in these types of allows them to give back.

"I am a huge supporter of this event. I think giving back to our community it's such a huge and rewarding opportunity and I'm just thankful I was asked to be a part of it," said Staci Deal, owner of Plato's Closet.

Small shops said they offer a friendly face and old fashioned service. However, competition is fierce in the world of big retailers and online shopping.

"It's all about education, educating people that it does make a difference when you do shop in local boutiques and local stores," said Mertins.

The money raised tonight will go to the university of Arkansas Food Pantry. Fashion week continues through Saturday.
