Rain May Have Played Factor in Garrison Bridge Crash

Heavy rain Thursday morning could be to blame for a car crash leaving traffic at a standstill on the Garrison Avenue Bridge heading into Fort Smith.

Heavy rain Thursday morning could be to blame for a car crash leaving traffic at a standstill on the Garrison Avenue Bridge heading into Fort Smith.

According to 5NEWS crews on the scene, when the accident first occurred, traffic was backed up about two miles, as only one lane of Hwy 64 East was open to commuters during rush hour morning traffic.

Fort Smith Police say a blue Hyundai Sonata rear-ended a sliver SUV on the heavily traveled bridge at about 7:45 a.m. Thursday.

The driver of the Hyundai was treated at the scene in an ambulance, with what appeared to be minor injuries.

Traffic was backed up for approximately one mile making travel difficult for those on their early morning commute.

The vehicle was loaded onto a wrecker and was cleared from the bridge, easing a large traffic delay.

Fort Smith Police and the Oklahoma Highway Patrol both assisted with the accident.
