Fort Smith police say they’ve taken at least one report of the “text phishing” scam. Several people have told 5NEWS they also received the text message claiming to be from the “Liberty Bank Security Department.”

The text claims the recipient’s Mastercard has been locked and a phone number is provided to call. Fort Smith Police say when you call the number, it asks for the 16 digit card number, PIN, and expiration date.

“If a customer called the number and entered the information, within 10 seconds there were authorizations coming in at a rate of 10 per second,” said Sgt. Daniel Grubbs in a statement from his department. “This was faster than many systems could keep up with to block the transactions.”

Police say there were multiple texts sent with different phone numbers to call.  With assistance from the Secret Service, the numbers in the U.S. quickly shut down.
