GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — A Grand Junction man was sentenced to five years probation for shooting a woman in the head after he confused her red Mohawk for a bird.
Derrill Rockwell, 49, said thought the woman, who was sitting near a hill by his home, was a fowl that had been harassing his cats.
He realized his mistake when he heard the 23-year-old woman moaning in pain. Her injury was not life-threatening.
According to KREX in Grand Junction, the woman was a transient who left Colorado and could not be reached to testify.
Rockwell was sentenced for felony possession of a weapon by a prior offender.
