Jon Woods launched a mail and billboard campaign today in the state Senate District 7 race calling into question his opponent’s tax votes.

Woods, a Republican state House member from Springdale, is running in the May 22 GOP primary against state Sen. Bill Pritchard, R-Elkins. District 7 encompasses Springdale, Johnson, and parts of Fayetteville and eastern Washington County.

A campaign mail piece from Woods was set to hit mailboxes in the district today. It features a mug shot of Pritchard on a red background and reads, “Indisputable Fact: Bill Pritchard has voted for over $559 million in tax increases.”

A digital billboard that went up today carries the same image and message. The billboard is near the south parking lot beside La Huerta restaurant on North College Avenue. Five similar billboards are set to go up in the district Thursday.

The Woods campaign also has launched a website, 559million.com, also calling Pritchard’s tax votes into question.

Pritchard said today the barrage this week is an attempt by Woods to “go negative and distort my record.”

Since 2005, Pritchard has voted for $339.5 million in tax cuts that passed into law, he said.

Pritchard said the No. 1 issue in the race is job creation. He said with more than 30 years experience owning and operating a successful business he knows what it takes to get people back to work.

Woods and Pritchard are scheduled to debate tonight at 7 p.m. in the Sam’s Club Community Room at Arvest Ballpark.

The winner of the Republican primary faces Democrat Diana Gonzales Worthen in the Nov. 6 general election.
