Authorities in Chicago arrested a Rogers man accused in a hit-and-run last year.

Jose Gates, 27, faces a charge of attempted second-degree murder, Rogers police said. He struck and injured a 23-year-old Springdale man on Dec. 20, police said.

The victim, Oscar Cortez, was standing at the 1200 block of West Sunset Street in Rogers when he was struck by a Chevrolet Blazer driven by Gates, police said. Gates fled the scene and ultimately left the state.

An investigation showed that Gates intentionally struck Cortez, and a warrant was issued.

On April 21, Chicago police stopped Gates for driving while intoxicated. He was arrested on the Rogers warrant and extradited to Benton County.

Gates was in the county jail Wednesday awaiting a bond hearing. He also faces a charge of possessing a firearm from an earlier, unrelated incident, police said.

He previously lived at 1915 S. N Street in Rogers, a jail report states.
