U.S. Forest Service Director of Law Enforcement David Ferrell has named Officer K. Gary Rose, of LeFlore County, as the 2011 Law Enforcement Officer of the Year.

Rose, a 36-year Forest Service veteran, received the award last month in Vancouver, Wa.

Some of Rose’s major accomplishments include initiating and leading a multi-year investigation with partners into a marijuana operation that resulted in seizure of plants and drugs with a street value of $650,000 and property forfeiture, guns and cash totaling nearly $1 Million.

He has worked with the National Guard on numerous drug eradication missions and was a lead officer in search, rescue and recovery efforts during a 2010 flood that resulted in 20 fatalities on the Ouachita National Forest.  Archeological artifact theft, timber theft and arson investigations were cited as well.

“I can say without reservation that the work Gary has accomplished through the years has made people safer, has increased the quality of their lives, and has protected valuable natural and cultural resources for future generations,” said Ouachita National Forest Patrol Captain Tim Fincham.

Rose retired at the end of last year.

His employment links generations in a family history with the Forest Service.  His father, Kenneth Rose, and grandfather, Bill Dehart, both retired from the agency.  His son, Justin, works for the Forest Service as a firefighter.
