Homeowners in the River Valley area are seeing many more bugs and worms crawling around this year. Alison Litchy, a forestry expert, said it's because we didn't have a deep freeze over the winter to kill them off.
Kim Olson said this year's worm problem is really affecting the Oak trees in his yard.
"I've lived here 17 years and I've never seen anything like this," said Olson.
Olson first noticed the problem about three weeks ago. He would come home from work to find worm droppings covering his sidewalk. A few days later, he noticed worms on the ground. That's when he realized they were eating through the leaves on his Oak trees.
"If your tree does get defoliated, it's okay. It can handle it. It's made for it," said Litchy, who also stressed that this is a common process.
Litchy expects this specific species of worms to die off sometime in the next few weeks. However, the Forestry Commission warns another generation of these worms will be back sometime in late August or early September.
