(CNN) — Don’t judge a cake by its stature – June 14 is National Strawberry Shortcake Day!

It’s been said that Shakespeare named a character after shortcake long before it inspired a cartoon. This multi-layered desert has been around since about 1850 and usually a sure sign that warmer weather is on the way. It’s the perfect blend of buttery and creamy and sweet, and the different textures from each element make for a very satisfying treat.

The ‘short’ in short cake comes from shortening – the fat or lard used to make the cake flaky. Instead of being a traditional cake base, shortcake can be more like a biscuit or scone. The final product sort of looks like a hybrid between strawberries and cream and traditional scones with jam.

Incorporating seasonal fruit into dessert is a great way to sweeten things up without adding sugar. What’s nice about strawberry shortcake is that it isn’t a formal, composed desert And when you’re done devouring its deliciousness, you’re sure to feel like a kid again – a little messy but content.
