Police Search for Suspect After Chase

Fort Smith Police are searching for a possibly armed Hispanic man who lead them on a chase Monday afternoon.

Officers set up a perimeter at N. M Street, near the intersection of 19th Monday evening. Police say it started as a car chase around 4:30 p.m. 

Sgt. Doug Brooks says officers saw a woman wanted on outstanding warrants and a Hispanic man in a vehicle at a gas station on Grand Avenue.

When officers approached the car, they fled, he says. Officers found the vehicle crashed on N. M Street. That’s when the man took off on foot, Sgt. Brooks says.

Police did not say why the man was running. The woman, Emily Whitaker, was arrested on felony warrants.

The Hispanic man is described as 5’6″ and 140 pounds.

Police recovered a gun on the scene. Cpl. Dooly says it is possible the man may have other weapons.
