A water shortage prompted the Sequoyah County Water Association to issue water restrictions Friday. Customers could be fined more up to $500 or have their water shut off if they do not comply.

Customers are using more water than they can pump, according to Jackie Plank with the Sequoyah County Water Association.

Residents living in the district are banned from outside water usage between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. This includes watering lawns, filling swimming pools, washing cars, sidewalks or other hard surfaces, says Plank.

Violators could be subject to a $100 fine for the  first offense, a $500 for the second offense, a third violation could result in disconnected water service.

Customers with even account numbers can water on even days from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. Customers with odd number accounts can do the same on odd number days.

The restrictions includes the town of Vian, Sequoyah County Water District #5, and all Sequoyah County Water Association customers from Green Leaf Lake, Okla. to Dora, Ark.

Anyone with questions can contact the Sequoyah County Water Association at 918-775-9672 or toll free at 866-775-9595.
