You may see a woman out walking area highways wearing a funny hat and a bright vest.

Teri Swezey, 57, a public health researcher is walking coast to coast to increase awareness of the struggles of vulnerable elderly and their caregivers.

Swezey says she has firsthand knowledge of problems that the elderly and their caregivers encounter.  She cared for her mother who had late stage dementia before her death.

Swezey calls her organization SOAR, which stands for “seniors obtaining assistance and resources.”

“I'm making this walk especially on behalf of the ‘boomer generation,’  we're both aging and we're taking care of our parents and our loved ones,” she said.

Swezey started her walk in North Carolina in April and hopes to walk across 12 southern states on her way to California.

She is also raising money for Meals on Wheels for the elderly, assistance for elderly medicine co-pays and relief services for caregivers as she makes her trek across country.
