Local and state leaders dedicated a historical marker in Johnson Monday commemorating the 150th anniversary of the Civil War.
The Arkansas Civil War Sesquicentennial Commission unveiled the Wartime Gristmill Destruction” Historical Marker at the Inn at the Mill on Greathouse Springs Road.
“The Arkansas Civil War Sesquicentennial Commission does hope to have at least one marker in all of the state’s 75 counties and as this marker tells the Johnson story, there’s dozens of other tales around the state, local stories that need to be told,” said Mark Christ, Arkansas Civil War Sesquicentennial Commission member.
Rep. Jon Woods, R-Sprindgale, said Confederate forces burned the mill down during the Battle of Pea Ridge.
“The destruction caused severe hardships for the area,” said Christ. “Dozens of mills were burned by the end of the war. This is a great opportunity, 150 years later, to share that story with modern viewers.”
The marker is sponsored by the Arkansas Civil War Sesquicentennial Commission, Inn at the Mill, City of Johnson, Rep. Woods, Arkansas Department of Parks and Tourism and Arkansas Natural and Cultural Resources Council.
