BENTONVILLE, Ark. — ESPN college football analyst Kirk Herbstreit was in Northwest Arkansas this weekend — on Friday for the Vype 7-on-7 Football Tournament in Bentonville, then on Saturday for the Walmart 50th anniversary celebration.

Herbstreit was complimentary of the Razorback football program, and said they had the potential to do special things.

“I think Arkansas had a really difficult situation there with Coach [Bobby] Petrino and everything that went on there,” he said. “I thought Jeff Long made a good choice in bringing in John L. [Smith], and I think he’ll do a great job.”

Arkansas was picked to finish third in the SEC West behind Alabama and LSU.

“I think they’re very fortunate to have Tyler Wilson, a veteran who’s been around,” Herbstreit said. “Knile Davis is healthy. I know Cobi Hamilton is on the outside, and Chris Gragg at tight end, but they have to find some other receivers.”

Not surprisingly, Herbstreit said the season hinged on the Razorbacks’ first SEC game of the year.

“Week three will really determine a lot for Arkansas,” he said. “They’re going to play Alabama at home, and if they can somehow pull it together and take advantage of being at home, they can win that game.”

Arkansas hosts Alabama at Razorback Stadium on Sept. 15.
