Hogs Football Coaches Hit the Links

Thursday’s media golf outing at Paradise Valley was the last chance for the Arkansas football coaching staff to get in some leisure time. Fall practice starts in exactly one week and after that all focus will be on the 2012 season.

Coaches were paired with media members in 4-some scrambles, with head coach John L Smith getting the honors as the first player off the first tee. With their hectic schedules, and recruiting 12 months out of the year, coaches rarely have any free time, let alone time to play a four-hour round. They are hardly scratch golfers, so they aren’t quite sure which of them is the best player, although Special Teams Coordinator Steve Caldwell is a popular bet.

“It has to be people that play,” said coach Smith. “That would come down to Caldwell or Allen.”

Offensive line coach Chris Klenakis can attest to that personally. “The last time I golfed with coach Caldwell (was) 18 years ago at Reno, Nevada when we were coaching there and he hit the ball pretty good then,” said Klenakis.

Caldwell has a more modest take on his game. “I wouldn’t say I’m the best. If I’m the best we’re hurting.” They’re just excited to get back to something they’re actually good at next Thursday.
