Fort Smith police confirmed a man wanted in a murder investigation was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound Wednesday evening.
Ibn Kamal Islam, 33, was found with a gunshot wound to the head inside the bedroom of a home in the 3200 block of South 60th Street just before 6 p.m. A 9-mm handgun was also found near the body, police say.
Sosa was home when the police SWAT team swarmed the house two doors down. She said, “Then I kind of peeked my head out and I seen all these cops and everything.”
Officers discovered Islam in the master bedroom. Investigators believe he shot himself in the head before they arrived.
Police went to the house to arrest Islam. They sent the SWAT team as a precaution. “He was not gonna go back to prison. He was having some irrational thoughts of potentially suicide-by-cop,” said Sgt. Grubbs.
Investigators used cell phone records to track Islam to the residence where he was staying with his girlfriend, according to police.
The girlfriend was not home at the time of the shooting, Grubbs said.
Islam was wanted on a first-degree murder warrant in the 35-year-old Chad Whitfield.
In that case, police responded to a shooting just after midnight Wednesday at a home in the 2100 block of North 57th Lane. Officers found Whitfield lying on the kitchen floor with multiple gunshot wounds, according to police.
