The question of whether Springdale should allow Sunday alcohol sales moved on to the next step Wednesday, as the City Clerk verified enough petition signatures to send the measure to the Washington County Clerk.

City Clerk Denise Pearce said her office verified 1,615 signatures. The effort needed 1,558. Pearce said she will turn the petition over to the County Clerk on Thursday for final certification before it heads to the Washington County Election Commission to be put on the November ballot.

Petition organizers first submitted the alcohol petition to the City Clerk’s office last week, but the petition came up 263 signatures short. State law allows public petitions an additional 10 days to collect the needed signatures if they come up short.

Springdale is just the latest area to potentially face a question of alcohol sales on the November ballot. Tontitown residents will vote in November whether to allow Sunday liquor sales in town. Benton County voters will decide whether to turn the county wet. A Madison County liquor petition would do the same.
