‘Konsplosion’ Kicks off at Convention Center
Thousands of people are expected to come to the Fort Smith Convention Center this weekend for one of the biggest anime conventions in the area.
“This is Konsplosion!” said event chair Brooklyn Shock. “We have a three day event. It’s a total nerd fest. We’ve got science fiction, anime, comic books, and video games.”
Konsplosion is holding its first fan convention in Fort Smith. Shock says they’re expecting to draw a crowd of around 2,000 people.
“We have about 275 separate activities over the course of three days,” said Shock.
Vendors from across the country, live bands, and even a burlesque troop are among the weekend’s entertainment.
“It’s just really enjoyable,” said fan Mami Tomoee. “You get to meet a lot of people and see really great costumes.”
Dressing up in character is always a must.
“I’ve had a few people get excited,” said Jessica Springer. “They’re like ‘Star Girl!’ I’m like yep, that’s me!”
Most people we spoke with say they enjoy meeting their fellow comic and anime fans.
“We’re com geeks I guess you could say,” said Mariah Bridges. “This is our thing.”
Mariah and Mark Bridges got married after meeting at a similar festival last year.
“It’s just like one of those moments, and we were talking to Brooke and we were like ‘hey, how would you feel about us getting married at the next convention,” said Mariah. “She was like ‘well, I know a guy that’s a priest and can actually do it for you,’ so it just happened.”
Whether you’re meeting new people or just enjoying some video games, Shock says you’ll be sure to have a good time.
“You would never get bored, and you would discover your inner nerd very quickly,” said Shock.
It’s only $20 to get into Konsplosion, or you can buy a weekend pass for $45. The event runs through Sunday. For more information, click HERE.
