Fayetteville High School students wore blue and gathered donations Wednesday to honor their classmate who died in a car crash earlier this week.

Skyler Shawn, 16, died Monday night from injuries he sustained after being pinned under a vehicle following a wreck in Springdale earlier that day.

The idea for students to wear blue in memory of Skyler started on Facebook and Twitter on Tuesday after students first heard of their classmates’ death.

“It blew up really fast on social media,” said Kylie Whitlock, a Fayetteville High student.

Whitlock and friends collected donations in the morning and during lunch hours Wednesday. They plan to continue Thursday. Whitlock said the students will give the money to Skyler’s family to help with bills, funeral costs or however the family sees fit.

“It’s just trying to help them relieve some of the stress a little bit,” Whitlock said.

Springdale police say Skyler’s brother Logan, 17, was driving a white Ford Explorer on Thompson Street when he crossed over the center lane and struck a blue Dodge Neon driven by Andrea Wood, 29. Skyler was ejected from the Explorer’s passenger side. The vehicle flipped before coming to rest on top of Skyler.

Emergency crews were able to free Skyler, who was awake and moving his arms as he was loaded into an ambulance in critical condition.

Logan was released later that night after being listed in stable condition. Wood was hospitalized in stable condition and released the next day, said Pat Driscoll, marketing manager for Northwest Medical Center.
