VIDEO: Cars Catch Fire in Fort Smith

An eyewitness captured this video of two vehicles on fire at the Quarry Shopping Center on Rogers Avenue in Fort Smith Monday.

The fire happened around 12:30 p.m. An officer on the scene said no one was injured. The fire started in a Honda and spread to a sedan parked next to it.

The owner of the Honda was inside a store when someone notified him that his car was on fire.

“I heard this loud noise then one of the girls said we need to call 911,” said Crystal Eaton, an eyewitness.

Eaton works inside the shopping complex where the cars caught fire. She grabbed a cell phone and started taping. “I was like oh my gosh this is like the movies,” said Eaton.

Thick black smoke poured into the air. “There were cars parked around it and people were running and trying to get their cars out of the way,” said Eaton.

Firefighters arrived to put out the flames. “They were there within the minute and the fire had ballooned from one car to the next,” said Captain Phil Christensen, of the Fort Smith Fire Department.

Investigators believe the first car had a short inside the dash. “The car parked next to it was just an exposure fire. Just happened to be the wrong place at the wrong time,” said Capt. Christensen.
