A pair of Northwest Arkansas schools are battling for the most number of National Merit Semifinalists.
Students are chosen for the distinction based on their scores in the PSAT, an exam taken by high school juniors. Fourteen Fayetteville High School students were recognized as National Merit Semifinalists this week for their high scores, the most students among any district in the state.
Bentonville High School was not far behind, with 11 students chosen.
Administrators say the distinction can help students net tens of thousands of dollars in scholarships for college.
National Merit Finalists will be chosen early next calendar year after students take their ACT exams.
