At What Age Should You Start Screening for Prostate Cancer

At what age should you start prostate cancer
screening if you have a strong family history?

The standard recommendations for screening are to start visiting your primary care doctor on an annual basis at age 50.  AT that time, a rectal exam would be included with the annual physical and a screening PSA would be checked.  If you have an increased risk of aggressive, early prostate cancer, which includes men with a strong family history or African Americans.  These men should start screening at age 40.  The recent panel review that initially recommended PSA screening be dropped has not  been adopted by any medical group or society.  So until we have more data, we’ll continue to do the standard yearly PSA and rectal exam.  And don’t let the rectal exam scare you away…you will SURVIVE!!!
