A panda cub born a week ago at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo in Washington, D.C., has died.

Zoo officials say the baby panda died Sunday morning.

Keepers heard the mother in distress and retried the cub and tried CPR, but the panda didn’t respond.

“It’s hard to describe how much passion and energy and thought and care has gone into this,” said Dennis Kelly, director of the National Zoo. “We’ve got a terrific team that works so hard, and I’m so confident , so proud of the staff, the volunteers, the scientists, the work that our Chinese colleagues have put into this.”

Zoo keepers aren’t sure what caused the cub’s death. There were no outward signs of trauma or infection.
