Greenland Suddenly Team to Beat in 3A-1 After Woeful Start

The Pirates lost two early-season games by a total of 64 points. Now with a new passion and urgency they control their own destiny in the 3A-1.

Greenland football didn’t start the season the way they expected. Two early losses by 64 total points may have been just what this team needed. Since then the Pirates have won their first two conference games and it's put them in the driver’s seat to win the 3A-1.

“Early season we didn't have a lot of good practices and didn't really come together as a team,” said senior quarterback Darian Froud. “After the second loss we got tired of it. We said we're going to put in work and try to win the conference. Ever since then we've been working hard every day.”

“I think we thought we were better than we were and didn't get to what Greenland football does and didn't work the way we should,” said senior safety Evan Johnson. “After that we started working and it showed the last couple of weeks.”

Now everyone is looking up at the Pirates. With five games left in their conference schedule the league title goes through Greenland. That's something no one around the region would have thought when they were getting pummeled 37-14 by Mansfield in week two.

“We just said we can't depend on each other,” said head coach Lee Larkin. “We can't worry about everyone else and we've got to take care of our own business. We've got to come to practice every day and get better, which is something we might not have been doing.”

Greenland does have one concern; their lack of depth. They only have 35 kids on this football team. As the season wears on, they're hoping injuries don't derail their season, especially the last game of the year on November 2 against rival West Fork. That might determine a conference title.

“(It’s) the biggest rivalry, but there's no off weeks in any conference game because any one can come get you,” said Johnson. “When you're on top of the conference you're going to have a bulls eye on your back. There's no exact one you can say, but West Fork is definitely one you want to win.”

Before they get to that, Greenland has four more games. Up next they face Mountain View at home Friday at 7:00pm.
