Two men were arrested Sunday after police say they crashed a car, then tried to hide guns and drugs from responding officers.

Police responded to the scene of a car accident in Fayetteville, where a brown sedan had crashed into a ditch. The vehicle was empty, but officers caught up to two men jogging west from the scene of the accident, according to a preliminary report from the Washington County Prosecutor’s Office.

When police caught up to the men, one man tried to conceal what may have been ecstasy by eating it, the report states. The man told officers he had eaten candy, police said.

Officers later found a plastic baggie with blue and orange tablets of what appeared to be ecstasy. Police also found a bag on the side of the road with a Smith and Wesson 38 handgun and a fully-loaded 380 semi-automatic pistol, the report states.

Robert Barber, 27, and Keith Matthews, 23, were arrested in connection with possession of a controlled substance and simultaneous possession of drugs and firearms, Matthews also faces a charge of tampering with evidence.

The men remained in the Washington County Detention Center on Tuesday awaiting a bond hearing.
