Text messages and a fire helped emergency crews successfully locate two hikers who went missing in Crawford County on Tuesday.

Authorities began looking for a 76-year-old man and a 60-year-old woman at 6:28 p.m. when police dispatchers first received an emergency call.

Crawford County Emergency Management assembled a team to track down the couple in the Fall Creek area. Search team members and the missing hikers kept in touch via text messages throughout the night. The couple was instructed to head west and start a fire along a river bed, which made them easier to find.

The hikers stayed in good spirits and asked rescue members to bring hot dogs, police said.

The couple was found at about 9 p.m. They were about nine miles from Highway 74. Emergency crews drove the hikers out of the woods on an all-terrain vehicle, said Dennis Gilstrap, Crawford County Emergency Management director.
