The Sequoyah National Wildlife Refuge is open for hunters who were picked in a drawing.
Those hunters were given a special permit to hunt on the refuge. It's meant to manage the deer herds and refuge officials say it's important to hold the hunts for several reasons.
"Get a deer herd that begins to grow too much, number one you can have diseases in your deer herd, overbrowsing on the vegetation, it can be hard on your vegetation,” said Chad Ford, visitor services specialist. “So things like that, you want to manage a deer herd to keep it healthy."
Deer management outside the refuge has also become vital.
New statistics show more car collisions with deer are happening in Oklahoma.
The odds of hitting a deer on the road in Oklahoma are 1 in 194, with deer-car collisions costing $4 billion each year, according to State Farm statistics.
