The Arkansas State Board of Education unanimously approved the opening of an open-enrollment charter school in Bentonville at the body’s regularly scheduled meeting Thursday.

Administrators for the Northwest Arkansas Classical Academy plan for the school to serve students in kindergarten through 12th grade, according to meeting documents from the Arkansas Department of Education.

The charter school is expected to have a maximum enrollment of 685 students after its first few years and may be built at 5121 Southwest Runway Drive in Bentonville, the documents state.

Administrators plan to open the facility next school year.

The Northwest Arkansas Classical Academy was one of three charter schools to gain approval at Thursday’s board meeting. Board members approved a high school in Little Rock by a 6-1 vote. A middle school in Pine Bluff was also approved.

Representatives for the academy notified the Bentonville School District of their plans before presenting to the state board.
