Sequoyah County voters chose to reelect Sheriff Ron Lockhart Tuesday night.

Unofficial election results show Lockhart, a Democrat, garnered 53 percent of the votes while Republican Larry Lane took home 46 percent.

During his campaign, Sheriff Lockhart touted his role in implementing a night shift, started a Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E) program and purchased new vehicles that did not cost taxpayers money.

“We’ve arrested more people for narcotics in this county in the last four years than eight years prior,” said Lockhart.

Lockhart says he also saved the county money.

“For the last two years I’ve saved over $400,000 a year just in the jail,” said Lockhart.

It was Lane’s first election. He worked for the Sequoyah County Sheriff’s Department, Sallisaw Police Department, and the district attorney’s office.

Seale has spent more than two decades working at the Poteau Police Department. The winner of that race will replace Bruce Curnutt who was defeated in the primary election.
