Arkansas women track and field coach Lance Harter said he will decide on disciplinary actions for star senior sprinter Regina George after she has her day in court.
George was one of three current or former Arkansas athletes arrested this past weekend. Middle linebacker Terrell Williams and former Arkansas star and Pro Bowl safety Ken Hamlin were arrested in separate incidents early Saturday morning and each faces a charge of driving while intoxicated.
Williams, a senior, was suspended indefinitely by Arkansas football coach John L. Smith. George, 21, faces charges of public intoxication, obstructing governmental operations, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest, according to Washington County Sheriff’s Office website.
George was released on $2,000 bond and has a Dec. 14 court date.
"There will be actions," Harter said. "We have to take first things first. We're not in season, and obviously there's going to be disciplinary action. We have to let the system make its judgment."
Arkansas' indoor track and field season begins January. Harter said a suspension is possible but that other punishments would be done before the season starts.
George was arrested at approximately 9 a.m. Sunday morning by Fayetteville police after an officer responded to a welfare check call from Washington Regional Medical Center. Hospital security called the police after an intoxicated woman who had just been discharged walked away from the hospital without shoes, a preliminary police report said.
The police said George was found walking south on Gregg Avenue, and she was unsteady on her feet with bloodshot eyes. The police said George denied having been at the hospital and identified herself as "Briyanna Thomas."
When an officer attempted to see the patient name on the hospital wristband she was wearing, George became upset, tried to leave the area and began to "actively resist" when the officer tried to restrain her, the report said.
George, of Chicago, is a 13-time All-American and five-time SEC champion in the 400-meter sprint and relays for the Razorbacks. She is the school record-holder in the individual 400-meter sprint and a member of relay teams that hold school records in the 1,600-meter relay and the distance medley relay.
George, whose father is Nigerian, won the Nigerian 400 national title and competed in the individual 400 and 1,600 relay at the 2012 London Olympics. She helped the relay team reach the championship round where it was disqualified, and George finished 11th overall in the individual 400.
