Thanksgiving dinner might cost a little more this year. Some Northwest Arkansas grocery stores say turkey prices are up.
“Usually this time of year you see ads for turkeys 69 to 89 cents a pound and they're all over a dollar right now,” said Ramsey Sealy, a shopper.
Reports from the American Farm Bureau Federation show sticker prices on turkeys jumped 3-percent this year.
Ozark Natural Foods in Fayetteville sells organic and natural turkeys. Store Manager Bly Townsley says their prices have not changed much.
“Prices seem to be pretty average as far as considering last year,” he said.
One local grocery store told 5NEWS the price of turkeys is more expensive this year because of the drought. A grocer says the drought caused feed prices to go up.
Stores told 5NEWS they have had to absorb some of the cost.
Some are offering turkey discounts in order to stay competitive.
“We still have plenty of our natural turkeys left and we're offering $15 off if you’re an owner with us,” said Townsley.
Customers shop around for the best deal. “I do look at the ads, yes, that’s what I do,” said Sealy. “Whoever has the lowest price is who I’m going to for the turkey.”
Ozark Natural Foods says they have already sold out of organic turkeys, but still have natural turkeys left.
