Target employees nationwide are speaking out against a change in the store’s Black Friday schedule.

Target officials announced stores would open at 9 p.m. Thanksgiving night to provide an after-dinner shopping event for families. Some Target employees were not as enthusiastic and one started an online petition titled “Save Thanksgiving.”

There was a similar protest last year when Target opened at midnight.

“It’s a valid point,” said shopper Mary Tuominen. “Thanksgiving is a family time, how far are we going to go for retail and commercialism?”

More than 150,000 people have signed the online petition.

“Nobody wants to come in second in that race, it’s really a question, people are thinking about shopping, they want to go shopping,” said professor Jon Seltzer of the University of St. Thomas.
