An Arkansas State Trooper collided with a car Tuesday while trying to catch up to a suspect, according to Fort Smith Police.

A “be on the lookout” was called in for a reckless driver on Interstate 540 around 5 p.m. The trooper was trying to catch up to a vehicle matching the description, police said.

The trooper followed the vehicle into a Fort Smith neighborhood, when his cruiser was t-boned by a white Chrysler at the intersection 38th and J streets.

“The trooper approached the intersection and activated his blue lights,” said Fort Smith Patrolman David Leslie. “When the trooper went through the intersection he was hit by a passing motorist.”

The driver of the Chrysler was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. The trooper was not hurt, according to Arkansas State Police dispatchers.

The reckless driving suspect was able to get away during the crash, said Patrolman Leslie.

No one ticketed in the accident.
