Several area political candidates were back to watching poll results Tuesday night, three weeks after the general election resulted in several runoff elections.
Alan Long defeated Mike Emery 382 votes (60 percent) to 259 votes (40 percent), in Fayetteville’s Ward 4, Position 2 runoff.
Long and Emery edged three other candidates earlier this month for the chance at a runoff election. Long gained 37 percent of the vote in the general election to Emery’s 22 percent. No other candidate had more than 18 percent of the vote for that seat.
Jeff Watson beat Teresa Moore Powers in Springdale’s Ward 3, Position 2 runoff election 470 votes (66 percent) to 243 votes (34 percent). Watson won 45 percent of the general election vote three weeks ago to Powers’ 28 percent. No other candidate had more than 16 percent.
Bill Sergeant soundly defeated Misty C. Caudle in West Fork’s Ward 2, Position 1 runoff 133 votes (76 percent) to 42 votes (24 percent). The two candidates beat out Fred Robinson for a shot at the runoff election. Sergeant garnered 40 percent of the vote to Caudle’s 36 percent.
Incumbent Bob Goodwin successfully defended his Rogers City Council seat with 986 votes (60 percent) to challenger Carlos Chicas’ 666 votes (40 percent), according to the Arkansas Secretary of State election website.
Goodwin and Chicas beat out two other challengers in the general election Nov. 6. Goodwin netted 35 percent of the vote, while Chicas received 25 percent. Since no candidate received more than 50 percent of the vote, the top two vote-getters met head-to-head Tuesday to vie for the Ward 4, Position 1 seat.
In the other Rogers City Council runoff race, Andrew Hatfield defeated Keith Jackson 777 votes (52 percent) to 719 (48 percent), according to the Secretary of State’s Office. Jackson and Hatfield were vying for the Ward 3, Position 2 city council seat held by Betsy Reithemeyer, who did not run in the general election.
Jackson and Hatfield each received less than 40 percent of the vote in the general election, but beat out Mauricio Herrera, who netted 25 percent of the vote.
