RAZORBACK

Social media sites were buzzing at midday Tuesday that Oklahoma State head football coach Mike Gundy was close to being named the next head coach at Arkansas.

5NEWS content partner Bo Mattingly said at about noon that Arkansas Athletic Director Jeff Long has made an offer to Oklahoma State head football coach Mike Gundy and that Gundy has until Wednesday to decide.

Reports also indicate Gundy has told his team he is considering offers from both Tennessee and Arkansas, Mattingly said.

However, sources also told 5NEWS that Gundy won’t be the coach and that an announcement could come as early today.

Gundy’s success at Oklahoma State has made him an attractive name to many prestigious programs. In 2010 Oklahoma State won 10 regular season games for the first time in program history. In 2011 they rose to number 2 in the BCS, its highest national ranking in history.

Throughout the coaching search Athletic Director Jeff Long has said he wants a coach who is a proven winner at the highest level. Gundy has proven that in a difficult Big 12 playing against Oklahoma and Texas every year. The Cowboys won the Fiesta Bowl last season giving the school its first ever BCS win.

Gundy’s name has been linked to both the Arkansas and Tennessee jobs, but it was widely speculated that he would not leave his alma mater. Gundy was a quarterback at Oklahoma State from 1986-1989 and has had a hand in four of the five 10 win seasons in the school’s history.

Oklahoma State finished the 2012 regular season with a 7-5 record, culminating with a trip to the Heart Of Dallas Bowl on Jan. 1.
