Fayetteville police arrested two men Thursday they say led officers on a high speed chase before crashing a car that was filled with drugs.

Earle Hughes, 39, was arrested on suspicion of possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, fleeing from police and several other charges. Shahan Stewart, 36, faces charges of possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Hughes, the alleged driver, remained Thursday in the Washington County Detention Center on $7,000 bond. Stewart remained in jail on $5,020 bond.

Officers began following Hughes’ vehicle after an improper lane change at about 2:30 a.m. When police attempted the pull the car over, the vehicle sped up to about 90 miles per hour on Crossover Boulevard, police said.

The car disregarded traffic signals and eventually turned east onto U.S. Highway 412 and reached speeds of 100 miles per hour, according to a preliminary report from the Washington County Prosecutor’s Office.

The vehicle drove through the backyard of a house at 412 and Holiday Road, and hit a tree, police said.

Hughes’ car then fled onto Parsons Road and drove through a yard, ending up on a dead end street, the report states.

Hughes and Stewart were then arrested by officers.

Police located 5.6 grams of methamphetamine and half a gram of marijuana in the vehicle, as well as various syringes, a spoon, straws, coffee filters, a pipe and a digital scale, according to the preliminary report.
