Bielema Names Randy Shannon Linebackers Coach
A three-time National Champion is joining the Arkansas Razorback coaching staff. Sunday night Bret Bielema named former University of Miami head coach Randy Shannon as the new Razorback linebackers coach.
Shannon, 46, was 28-22 in four seasons at Miami, where he was a star linebacker from 1985-89. Shannon was a part of three National Championship teams as a player and assistant coach.
““Randy Shannon is a great coach and a great person,” Bielema said. “He has spent nearly his entire coaching career at Miami, and his defenses consistently ranked inside the top 10 nationally. He is a disciplinarian who has high standards, and he is skillful at relating to his players. He is a coach players turn to for guidance, and his players have always been prepared and played with intensity and desire.”
Shannon was linebackers coach at TCU this past season after sitting out one year after being fired by Miami in 2010. He was defensive coordinator at Miami for six seasons and earned the Frank Broyles Award as the nation’s top assistant in 2001.
After his college playing career ended, Shannon was an 11th-round draft choice by Dallas in 1989. He played two seasons in the NFL before returning to Miami as a graduate assistant.
