University police arrested a Fayetteville man after they say he tried to steal two bicycles on campus with his Jeep vehicle.

Thomas John Bednarski, 22, was arrested Thursday on suspicion of theft by receiving and possessing instruments of a crime. He remained Thursday night in the Washington County Detention Center on $2,910 bond, according to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office.

Police were contacted early Thursday morning by a university employee who claimed to have just witnessed Bednarski cut two bicycle locks and load both bikes into his silver Jeep.

An officer caught up to the suspect’s vehicle and saw three bikes in the back of Bednarski’s Jeep, according to the University of Arkansas Police Department.

Police stopped the vehicle and saw red bolt cutters and a cut bike cable in plain view next to Bednarski, according to a preliminary report from the Washington County Prosecutor’s Office.

The officer found a cut bike lock in Bednarski’s pocket, the report states. The witness verified the identity of the other two bicycles, and police arrested Bednarski, according to the preliminary report.
