Rogers Star Maggie Montoya Named Gatorade Runner of the Year

This is the third time Montoya has earned the honor; two for cross country and one for track.

For three straight years Rogers star Maggie Montoya has been on top of the high school running world. For the third time she is being named the Gatorade Arkansas Runner of the Year.

She now has two for cross country and one for track.

On Monday, Montoya also had something else to be excited about. She will continue her running career at Baylor next year.

Montoya has two individual State Championships and the school has two team State Championships, due in large part to her hard work. Yet, Montoya refuses to brag and credits those around her for her success.

“There is no slacking off,” said Montoya. “It’s a long season and tons of training, miles and speedwork. I couldn't do it without the support of my coaches and teammates. It means a lot that they are always there for me.”

“It’s hard enough to win that thing once,” said Rogers coach Carl Efurd. “So to win that thing three times, it’s amazing.  She has been so good for so long.  We aren't going to know what it’s like not to have Maggie on the team.  She has been helping us for the past four years.  She is a great kid to coach.”
