A Greenland man is facing charges after police said he trapped his ex-girlfriend in a room in his home and fired two shots from a handgun near her.
James Cox, 56, was booked into the Washington County Detention Center on Sunday morning and released three hours later on $5,000 bond, according to the Sheriff’s Department website. He has a Feb. 13 court date.
A preliminary police report said Cox’s ex-girlfriend, Ashley Knotts, told officers Cox called her Friday and told her to come to his house to pick up a package. Knotts, who told officers Cox was upset because she has a boyfriend, showed up to Cox’s residence on Main Street and, after she entered, Cox pulled handgun, the report said.
Cox took Knotts into the tanning bed room and told her he was going to kill her, the report said. Knotts told officers Cox fired the gun twice, once near her head and once near her leg, the report said, with the bullets going into the ceiling and a wall.
Knotts told officers she got on her knees to plead Cox for her life and he eventually let her go, the report said. Knotts said, as she was leaving, Cox told her he would kill her if she told police, but Knotts answered she was going to and left as quickly as she could, the report said
Police officers interviewed an employee of Cox’s who said he saw Knotts at the residence Friday morning, and a search warrant discovered fragmented lead, a .22 caliber shell casing and bag that tested positive for methamphetamine.
Cox faces charges of terroristic threatening, kidnapping and possession of methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia, all of which are felonies.
