A homeless man is behind bars after police say he broke into a Fayetteville apartment and sexually assaulted a 13-year-old girl.

Robert Broadway, 29, was arrested Friday on suspicion of second-degree sexual assault, third-degree battery, disorderly conduct and public intoxication, among other charges. He remained Monday in the Washington County Detention Center on $15,855 bond, according to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office.

Police responded to East 12th Street after the residents said Broadway, who used to live there, walked into an apartment unit drunk and tried to hug a woman. After the woman pushed Broadway away, he went to the living room and sat on the woman’s 13-year-old daughter, according to a preliminary report from the Washington County Prosecutor’s Office.

The suspect eventually got off of the girl, touching her inappropriately while standing up, the report states. Broadway left the apartment and was later identified after being arrested on separate accusations.

The suspect told police he went to the apartment to sell drugs to one of the residents. He denied touching the girl, then later said his elbow may have accidentally touched her, the preliminary report states.
