An 18-year-old Oklahoma man is being held without bond for allegedly cutting a woman’s throat “from ear to ear,” according to court documents.

Jamie Blake Bender, 18, of Whitefield, was charged with assault and battery with a deadly weapon Tuesday (Jan. 15) in connection with the attack of Whitefield, Okla., resident 20-year-old Kelby Atchley.

Atchley was also stabbed multiple times, according to court documents. She remains in a Tulsa hospital.

“We believe she’s going to make it,” Haskell County Sheriff Brian Hale told the Stigler News Sentinel Wednesday morning.

Deputies responded to a home in the 300 block of south Main in Whitefield just before 4 a.m. on Jan. 11. They found a knife and mattress saturated with blood in the front bedroom of the home, court documents state. There was also a large amount of blood on the front porch and various parts of the home.

But Bender was nowhere to be found.

Four other people were home at the time of the stabbing. They told deputies they didn’t know anything was wrong until Atchley woke them up, claiming Bender had stabbed her. One witness told the deputy that Bender collected knives and would likely have a knife on him.

Officers on the scene later noticed a man wearing dark shorts and a dark shirt walking toward them on Highway 2. The man identified himself as Bender.

Court documents state Bender told the officers: “When I woke up and saw what I did, I took off. I came back because I am better than that and I love this family. Is she dead? Did I kill her?”

Bender was placed into custody and taken to the Haskell County jail.

Atchley was taken to an emergency room at Stigler Hospital. The responding Officer John Vail described her wounds as “the worse he had ever saw,” court documents state. She was later taken by medical helicopter to St. John Medical Center in Tulsa.
