Smith Takes Down 100th Career Win

Southside senior wrestler accomplishes feat; first Fort Smith product to break century mark.

Isaac Smith may not strike fear into opponents before a match starts. But he usually gets the last laugh anyway.

Southside’s Smith picked up his 100th career win Tuesday in a wrestling match at Northside. The senior has lost just 16 times in his four years with the Rebels.

“It just feels really good,” Smith said. “I’ve been wrestling since my freshman year now and it is a big milestone for me. It felt really good to accomplish that. Not many, actually no Fort Smith wrestler have done that besides me and there are very few Arkansas wrestlers who have done that.”

Smith, like most kids in Fort Smith, played football in junior high but decided to put his full attention to wrestling following his ninth grade season.

"My brother started when I was in 8th grade,” Smith said. “I didn't get to start until my 9th grade year after I left the football season at Chaffin. I just came in here, started rolling around and realized I was good at it so I dropped football and started wrestling and started putting all my time on the mat.”

Smith is without question the leader of the Rebels’ wrestling squad. He made sure practice got underway before coach Larry Johnson arrived on Thursday.

“He's one of those rare individuals that will work. He comes in and once he hits the door, he's about going to work,” Johnson said.

Smith will try to improve on his 100-16 career record this weekend as he and the Rebels will compete in the Paul Post Invitational in Sallisaw.
