Hogs Officially Open 2013 Season

Arkansas tries to deal with lofty expectations entering year.

Expectations have never been higher heading into a season than they are right now for the Arkansas baseball team.

A pair of preseason polls has the Razorbacks ranked No. 1 while two others have the Hogs in the top three.

Arkansas took to the field Friday afternoon for the first official practice of the season and obviously excitement was in the air.

“We are super excited.  We can`t wait to get this thing rolling and get into conference play and start winning some games,” Arkansas outfield and Alma native Matt Vinson said.

Arkansas had never been ranked atop the polls in the preseason before but coach Dave Van Horn knows it’s where you finish and not where you start.

“It`s an honor, really it`s an honor,” Van Horn said. “But it`s just the beginning.  In baseball we play a lot of games and its going to fluctuate.  I just want to hang around the top ten all year and if we do that means we have a real good season and we are consistent.”

“We are going to have highs in the season we are going to have lows,” Arkansas pitcher Barrett Astin said. “We just need to take care of our business and hopefully we are No. 1 in the end.”

The Hogs open the season on Feb. 15th against Western Illinois.
