Just like a switch is turned on it seems that the UAFS Lions can do just that whenever a Heartland Conference game is on the schedule.
The Lions exploded for 58 second half points to knock off 21st ranked Newman University at the Stubblefield Center Saturday night to remain perfect in league play.
Jake Toupal scored a game and career high 28 points for UAFS, 18 of which came after halftime.
“Sometimes we just click and I feel like when we click like that there’s not a lot of people that can stop us and it showed out there,” Toupal said. “When we get on a roll we are tough to handle.”
Toupal was 10-of-17 from the field and added five rebounds in 27 minutes off the bench.
“Jake made some huge, tough plays right down there in the second half,” UAFS coach Josh Newman said. “(Toupal) finished a three-point play, got a big rebound. Guys don't realize what he does on the other end. He's active. He sticks his nose in there. He made some huge tough individual basketball plays and that really ignited us.”
Djordje Stojanovic added 19 points and a career high 15 rebounds to help the Lions improve to 7-0 in the Heartland Conference.
With the win, UAFS (11-6, 7-0) now has a full two game lead in the conference standings. Newman (14-3, 5-2) will host the Lions on Feb. 23.
