A Conway police officer who was hit by a vehicle while working an accident Thursday evening has died from his injuries. 

Officer William Michael McGary, 26, passed away shortly after 5 p.m. Friday in a Little Rock hospital according to Conway Police.

The police department released the following statement:
“Please continue to keep his family in your prayers. CPD has spent the past day with the McGary family, they are very proud that he was a member of the Conway Police Department and appreciative of all the outpouring of support. The presence of all the officers and other members of our agency has helped them through this difficult time. Please continue to offer them love and support in the days ahead. “

Barry Strickland, 31, of Conway, the man accused of hitting the officer with his vehicle, has been charged with 1st degree battery, DWI- drugs, careless driving, and disobeying a police officer. He’s being held on a $150,000 bond in the Faulkner County Jail, according to a report from our Little Rock affiliate KTHV.

Conway Officer Hit by Car Dies

Officer McGary was helping direct traffic around a car accident when a vehicle driving by Strickland hit him Thursday night (Jan. 31), according to LaTresha Woodruff with the Conway Police Dept.

McGary was airlifted from the scene to a Little Rock hospital due to the severity of his injuries, Woodruff said.

No one else was injured.
