The Fayetteville Police Department responded to a call of a man accidentally shooting himself in the hand at the KUAF radio station, said Sgt. Craig Stout.
The scene was turned over to the University of Arkansas Police Department, who are working the incident, Stout said.
The student had brought a revolver to the station in his backpack. He took the gun out to show to another student. At that time, the gun accidentally discharged, and the student sustained an injury to his hand, said Rick Stockdell, the KUAF station manager.
The student was rushed to Washington Regional Medical Center in Fayetteville with non-life-threatening injuries.
"The police said it was pretty bad," Stockdell said.
The weapon used in the incident, a Judge model of a Taurus .45-caliber revolver, fires .410 shotgun shells. The shooting left multiple holes in the wall near a fire alarm.
The work-study student was an employee at the radio station. He was in the building's breakroom when the firearm discharged, according to a news release from the University of Arkansas.
Fayetteville police responded to the scene at 12:42 p.m., the release states.
