Charleston was thought to have a rebuilding year after reaching the 3A championship game last season.
The Tigers lost a majority of their roster. They also brought in a brand new coaching staff.
But it appears nothing has changed in Charleston.
New coach BJ Ross has stepped in and helped the program extend their conference winning streak to 68 games after a perfect 14-0 this season but he gave all the credit to his players.
“I got left with some good players,” Ross said. “The deal about it is, our kids don`t want to embarrass our community and they work extremely hard. You won`t find any more hard working kids. I knew what it was like because I coached the girls here before and coming back has been really easy for me.”
Charleston uses a stable of underclassmen but the leadership of a pair of seniors have helped bridge the gap.
“Just focus on what we did last year,” senior guard Hamilton Newhart said. “We were focused all year and we kept what we were doing in practice and brought it out on the court every day.”
“It means a lot for us to carry on the tradition for the seniors that have graduated last year just to keep building on what they're doing and I know these underclassmen are going to build on what we did this year,” senior guard Clint Moore said.
The Tigers are looking for yet another district tournament title this week in Atkins. Charleston will face rival Lavaca Thursday in the semifinals.
