Star Heritage Swimmer Keeps it in the Family

Heritage High School swimmers Carly and Colton Holland have been swimming together since they were in elementary school.

Heritage High School swimmers Carly and Colton Holland have been swimming together since they were in elementary school.

"It’s pretty cool having siblings swim with you because you can relate and you have things to talk about," said Senior Colton Holland. "It helps you competitively because you don’t want your sister to beat you.  It helps me swim a little faster."

"It’s really fun," said Freshman Carly Holland  "Colton is the one that actually got me into swimming.  It’s so much fun and it’s encouraging to both of us."

Colton's high school career is coming to an end this year, but for his younger sister Carly it's just beginning.  As a freshman she is already making quite a splash.

She has top five state times in five different events.  In Wednesday's district meet she won gold in both the 100 butterfly and backstroke events. She has achieved such success at a young age because of her work ethic.

"I set goals every time and try to meet them," Said Carly.  "I practice every day to get myself up there as well."

Ever since Carly started swimming in elementary school she has been successful.  It was apparent at a young age that she has pure swimming talent.

"She is a natural swimmer," said Heritage Swimming Coach Julie Sakalares.  "As an athlete I think you are born a swimmer or born a runner, I think she is just a natural.  She is tall and slender and can get through the water quickly."

Carly definitely sees swimming in her life for a long time but hasn’t even started to think about college.  As for Colton he has narrowed his college search to three and will likely make a decision within the next month. Carly and Colton will head to the Swimming State Meet in Little Rock next weekend.
