The small community of Heber Springs, Ark., is dealing with the loss of country music singer Mindy McCready.

McCready, 37, shot and killed the dog of her late boyfriend before taking her own life Sunday (Feb. 17), according to Cleburne County Sheriff Marty Moss.

“We’re shocked that it happened and we wish she would’ve gotten some help before she made the choices she made,” said Zach Carlisle, a resident of Heber Springs.

Many in the town say they didn’t really the troubled country singer and had not heard many details about her death.

“You know, I live not far from here as well and I was home but didn’t hear anything or you know, know anything happened,” said Nina Anderson, who also lives in the town.

Those who talked with 5NEWS say McCready and her family kept to themselves at a home on Greers Ferry Lake when they were in town.

“I knew she had a vacation home here but I didn’t even know them at all,” said Andesron. “I don’t know how often they were here or anything like that.”

McCready’s vacation home on the lake is five miles west of Heber Springs.

McCready is the fifth former cast member of “Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew” to die in the past two years. She appeared on Season 3 of the VH1 show.
